I grew up dreaming of leather jackets and altered scales, not sequins and country music.
I started playing bass in my hometown of Auckland, New Zealand, trying to be like Jaco Pastorius and dreaming of moving to New York to play in dingy, basement, jazz clubs.
Never in a million years would I have believed that 15 years later I’d be moving to Music City USA and chasing those big country stages.
But when I was in Vegas chasing my jazz dream, I met a boy.
And he lived in London, so I moved there too.
And we started playing country music together and he forced me to start singing backing vocals (something I was mad about at the time and am infinitely grateful for now).
We formed a band, released an album, and decided that moving to Nashville would be just the thing for us to do.
Before we could move though, we broke up…
Spoiler alert, that puts somewhat of a wrench in the works when you’re planning a life-changing move together.
Once most of the tears had dried, we decided that actually moving to a new country together was still a good idea (a lot of future boyfriends did not understand nor agree with this decision).
So in 2014, we packed up our lives in Auckland (for the 4th time for me) and moved to Nashville Tennessee - home of hot chicken, pedal taverns, and the world’s best Country and Americana musicians.
Since then I’ve traveled all over the world as a hired gun, played on huge stages, met heroes, recorded albums with people I love, and experienced a life I never could have dreamed of back when all that mattered was nailing the most difficult bebop head on bass.
A crazy, meandering, wonderful shit show of a life filled with lessons more valuable than any amount of money I’ve earned along the way.
This is going to be the online home for those stories and lessons, I hope you enjoy them.
