"Where are you from?" - between Kiwis and non-english-native-speaking migrants to NZ it does get rather racist and often ends in various slurs. Me and some mates have compared conversations around that line, and nothing good ever comes from it. "No, where are you REALLY from?"
Again, I understand completely! I love your blogs and how you write. Descriptive stories with personal examples. My two homes are different as you know, spending every Summer of my life in Wisconsin and the rest in Nashville.
When I was a server in Nashville, customers would look at me strange when I greeted the table and would ask “how y’all doing?” I would get paranoid and check my appearance in the bathroom because I thought I had something on my face.
Sometime later they would look confused and ask me where I’m from. I told them I was from Wisconsin and they all exclaimed “I knew it!”
I never really minded their curiosity, but like you mentioned - it only reminded me I didn’t truly fit in Nashville.
How I would love to have a cute Southern accent while I sang my Country songs. :)
You were very instrumental in encouraging me to piece all of the fragments of my life together. From where I live to who I love etc…..
To live an authentic life.
You reminded me that it is what makes me different and special.
And so I will remind you that both of your homes make you unique and who you are. Don’t edit yourself based on location and why not confuse them for a little fun at the dairy and ask “how y’all doing?” ;)
Hi Vanessa from across the road in little kohukohu. Look forward to catching up soon. Xx

Loved this post, rang so true in so many ways. :)
